Yiaga Fitzroy Gardens Melbourne

Fitzroy Gardens, 230-298 Wellington Parade,
East Melbourne, VIC, Australia

Breathing new life into the centre of Fitzroy Gardens

Located in Melbourne’s historic Fitzroy Gardens on Wurundjeri Country, Yiaga transforms the former Pavilion Café into a refined fine dining destination that honours place, culture and Australian craft. Hunter Mason was appointed under an ECI to D&C contract to deliver the redevelopment, designed by Wardle Studio for Hugh Allen and The Vue Group.

Yiaga takes its name from the Wurundjeri word meaning “seek and find”, reflecting the spirit of discovery embedded in every element of the experience. The restaurant places Australian provenance at its core, with an ever-evolving menu and beverage program celebrating the nation’s farmers, fishers, growers, makers, artists and creatives.

The project reimagines the pavilion as an open-plan dining room and state-of-the-art kitchen, surrounded by the natural landscape. Constructed almost entirely from Victorian materials, the restaurant features a sculptural entry made from handmade, hand-pressed and hand-sanded vertical bricks inspired by elm bark. Inside, Australian craftsmanship is expressed through curved brickwork with seeping mortar, hand-made clay tiles, seamless decorative screed and Dekton-clad kitchen equipment.

The façade was upgraded with brick, concrete, steel-framed glazing and compressed cement sheeting, supported by significant structural works including new footings, headers and an extension to the existing building. The result is a warm, grounded dining environment that harmonises with the Gardens and elevates Hugh Allen’s culinary vision.
