Hunter Mason delivered the 6,000sqm fitout and refurbishment of the John Gorton Building, transforming the bunker, basement and sub-basement levels into a contemporary workplace for the Australian Government. Delivered over six months, the project created a high-quality workplace environment incorporating new meeting spaces, collaboration areas, upgraded amenities and integrated building services, supporting the evolving needs of a modern Federal Government workplace.

Beyond the workplace fitout, the project included significant landlord works to improve accessibility, compliance and long-term building performance. Key works included the construction of a new fire egress stair through an existing glazed atrium, the installation of a DDA-compliant lift, and the careful removal, restoration and reinstatement of the building’s heritage-listed feature ceiling. The project required meticulous planning, specialist coordination and disciplined delivery to successfully integrate modern workplace standards within one of Canberra’s most significant government assets.
