Constructing identity through colour

Hunter Mason delivered the transformation of Intuit’s Sydney headquarters at 1 O’Connell Street, spanning 3,400m² across Levels 34 and 35, under a Design & Construct model. Completed within a compressed 19-week programme, the project involved full demolition of the existing tenancy and construction of a high-performance, experience-led workplace designed to support a hybrid workforce and re-engage people with the office environment.

At the core of the project is the deliberate use of colour and light as constructed elements of the workplace. Rather than acting as decoration, colour was delivered as an architectural tool, defining space, guiding movement and reinforcing Intuit’s brand identity. Focus zones are expressed through calm, muted tones, while collaboration and event spaces are energised through bold colour and softer finishes, creating a clear yet intuitive transition between different modes of work.

A defining feature of the workplace is the complete demolition of the existing stair and its replacement with a custom curved blue oak stair, forming a central sculptural element within the space. The stair captures and refracts natural light, anchoring the arrival experience and embodying the project’s intent to integrate materiality, form and identity into a single built outcome.

The project also includes the first installation of the Dorma Skyfold Prisma fully automated operable wall system in the Southern Hemisphere, enabling spaces to transform in real time to support collaboration, events and focused work. This is supported by high-performance acoustic environments, premium finishes including terrazzo flooring and timber feature ceilings, and fully integrated services, AV and security systems.

Sustainability was embedded throughout delivery, including the reuse and donation of furniture to avoid landfill and extend material lifecycle. The project demonstrates a highly coordinated approach to design, cost and construction, resulting in a workplace that is flexible, high-performing and distinctly reflective of Intuit’s brand and culture.
